Spice Girls British pop group. Perhaps the most successful all female band in the history of popular music. Formed in 1994, the Spice Girls initially consisted of Victoria Addams aka ‘Posh Spice’ (1973– ), Melanie Brown aka ‘Scary Spice’ (1973– ), Emma Bunton aka ‘Baby Spice’ (1976– ), Melanie Chisholm aka ‘Sporty Spice’ (1974– ), and Geraldine Haliwell aka ‘Ginger Spice’ (1970– ). ‘Geri’ Halliwell left the group in 1998. The Spice Girls were a cleverly marketed blend of pop and attitude, or ‘Girl Power’. Their first single “Wannabe” (1996) became the biggest selling single by an all female group and their first album became the fastest selling album by a British act. They have sold 35m albums and 25m singles worldwide and starred in the movie Spiceworld (1997). The Spice Girls released three albums: Spice (1996), Spiceworld (1997), and Forever (2000). Although the group officially remains together, its members pursue careers as solo artists. in 1999 Victoria Addams married English footballer David Beckham.
